A Superstitious World

The other day my dad was driving on the way back home and he immediately stopped the car when he saw a black cat cross his vehicle. He believes that if a black cat crosses your vehicle, it brings bad luck along with it. One should stop and restart the vehicle to drive away the bad luck. I know it sounds insane and every time my dad does that i would be giggling thinking about the poor black cat who is not loved by anyone. I decided to pen down some weird and crazy superstitions around the world that may sound totally uncanny but  there are many people who truly follow such beliefs.

SCRATCH YOUR PALM

It is believed in India that if your left palm itches then u might receive money but if your right hand feels itchy then you are about to spend money. In India people still believe that money should be given from right hand and taken from the left and this forms the basis for the itchy superstitious story. It does sound weird to associate itchiness with money but many in Southern part of India still believe it.

WATER WATER EVERYWHERE

In Serbia it’s a good idea to spill some water behind a person who’s going to a job interview, headed out on a journey, or about to attempt any sort of endeavor at all. The movement of water’s said to symbolize fluidity and motion. However, if you pour it on anyone by mistake then fluidity can go to a whole new level.  Carrying an empty bucket, or even seeing someone carries one, is a bad omen. This is likely due to the fact that Tsar Alexander II was assassinated by a man with empty buckets for hands.

SPOOKY STONE

At Machu Picchu in Peru, the Intihuatana Stone is aligned with astronomy and the sun’s patterns. Shamanic legends say certain sensitive people can peek into the spirit world when they rub their forehead against the stone—whose name translates poetically to “Hitching Post of the Sun.” That does sound interesting. However, i hope rubbing your forehead against that strong rock would not give you boils. That’s quite a hard work to meet the spirits, don’t you think?

LUCKY RABBIT

Rabbits are fury and lovely animals and in Britain when you wake up on the first day of the month, saying the word “rabbit”, or “rabbits”, or “white rabbits”, or any combination of these, gives good luck for the whole month. When you open your eyes on the first day of the month make sure it’s the very first word you say instead of good morning.

UNLUCKY OR LUCKY NUMBER

4

China or Japan will be missing a fourth floor in every hotel or any important building. Four is considered unlucky as it sounds like the word for death in both languages. Four also is avoided in hospital floor and room numberings. The number eight, however, sounds like the Chinese word for fortune; 888 is considered a jackpot number, and many try to time important life events like marriages to dates that include eight. Even the officials scheduled the Beijing Summer Olympics to begin precisely at 8 p.m. on 8/8/2008. Even I should schedule all my important days around number 8 and see if it works.

THE EVIL EYE

Be it India, Africa and many other parts of the world still believe in the existence of evil or devil eyes. Even today if I go decked up for an occasion, my mom would come running from the kitchen with some salt in her hand and start moving it around me in circular motion and then from top to bottom so that i get saved from evil eyes. When anyone in my family gets sick they blame it on the neighbours evil eye. The evil eye superstition is quite prevalent in India and it starts right from a young age when a  black dot is drawn on the neck of  the new-born baby to save him/her from evil eye. Such is the fear of the devil eye.

Such weird and wacky superstitious list goes on and it keeps getting more crazier. I am sure some of  you guys would have a superstitious story to share with us. Let us know what you think about this. Do you really have any superstitious beliefs or do you think it is irrelevant in today’s world.
